Business (Industry) Patterns – A Quick Tutorial
The high level view of business processes and their
interactions, known as “Industry Pattern (or business pattern)”,
is a good way to get started.
These patterns capture a high level view of enterprise
functional areas (e.g., procurement, corporate management,
back-office operations), the major business processes in each
functional area (e.g., purchasing and payment within
procurement) and the key interactions between these processes.
For example, Figure 1, gives a very high level view of a
manufacturing company and its key business processes.
Such high level views are of great practical value to understand
and analyze business activities at enterprise level. For
example, this pattern can help you answer the following
questions:
• which business processes interface directly with the customers
• if one BP is eliminated, then what other BPs will be impacted
• if a given BP is outsourced, which other BPs will be impacted
• if an application package that supports a BP is replaced with
another application, what other applications/BPs will be
impacted.
We have created industry patterns of this type for several
industry segments that include manufacturing, healthcare,
telecom, and others. These business patterns are refined and
enriched as you proceed through the interviews with various
advisors.
